Helping At Home
In the middle of your reading record are several pages that show the sounds that letters, and combinations of letters, make within words. It is a good idea to regularly review and practise these. Not only will a good understanding help with reading, but will support the spelling of many words.
Regular (if possible, daily) reading will support your child in fluency and understanding of the text. It is import that you support your child in trying to work out unfamiliar words rather than reading the words for them. Ask questions about what has been read, and discuss what is happening in pictures.
Encourage any reading - if your child wants to read shop signs, let them! Comics and information leaflets are a good source of reading material.
Writing (and Spelling)
Again, any opportunity to write should be encouraged. Shopping lists, birthday lists, thank you letters, diaries and stories all develop ideas, help with handwriting and generate independence.
Spellings that are sent home should be practised - use coloured pencils to created rainbow words, write sentences using the words in context, cover the word, write it and check. The spellings that we give are those that your child is expected to be able to spell, and use within their writing in year 1.
Encourage your child to use "Real-Life" at home.

Playing number games, counting forwards and backward, counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s.
