Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 - Miss Rebecca Tooms and Mrs Sarah Franks

This page will tell you all about what we have been up to in the classroom! You can find our class timetables, curriculum information, spellings & learning that has taken place each term.

We would like to share our timetable with you, so that when you have an idea of the structure of the school day. This is of course subject to change with all the other exciting things that go on in the school! There are often theme days (or even weeks), visitors, trips, extra music lessons and specialist teachers.

Year 1 Term 4 Timetable

Term 1:

This term we have been focusing on writing sentences in literacy, remembering our capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We have also been looking at the stories Farmer Duck & Winnie Wagtail (Miss Tooms) and The Little Red Hen (Mrs. Franks). In maths, we have been looking at developing our counting skills, partitioning 2 digit numbers and completing simple addition questions. Every Wednesday afternoon we have PE and have been practising lots of different ways of moving around (e.g. skipping, side stepping, galloping). Our topic this term has been all about Pirates.

Please see below for photos from Barcelona's class assembly and our whole school trip to Noah's Ark.

“Last Friday we went on a whole school trip to Noah’s Ark. The weather was glorious and we were able to see all the animals! We even got to see a show and learned about farm animals such as cows, sheep, goats, chicken and donkeys. We even got the outdoor play area to ourselves all afternoon! It was a lovely day which we all enjoyed. A specials thank you goes to the parents who had offered to come with us. It was wonderful to have you join us for the day!

We all loved showing KS1 what we have been learning in Barcelona class since September. We spoke and sung with big voices and taught everyone something new about either science and materials or pirates!  We are looking forward out whole Year 1 assembly on Thursday 25th October which parents are invited too.

Term 2:

On Thursday 29th November, Barcelona class enjoyed sharing their work with other children and parents during their Showcase Assembly. It was fantastic to see them taking pride in all the hard work that they have been doing since September! Here are some photos of them showing this work to their friends in Paris class.

On Wednesday 12th December 2018, Year 1 shared a Christmas lunch together. This was a great time for us to talk to each other and share our feelings (mostly excitement!) about Christmas!

Term 3:

This term we have been exploring Our World, looking at continents & oceans in Topic and focusing on travelling as the foundations for our literacy work. In our writing, we have mainly been focusing on our grammar, looking at conjunctions, tenses and suffixes. Throughout maths this term we have focused on measurement.

During the last week of January, we have enjoyed taking part in a whole school 'Lights, Camera, Action' Theme Week. Year 1 had been looking at the TV series & films of 'The Gruffalo' and 'Peter Rabbit'. Here are some of our fantastic Peter Rabbit portraits and stick puppets. We also created a dance in PE which we really enjoyed (especially the flossing at the end!).

Tuesday 5th February was celebrated for Chinese New Year across the world. Here in Year 1, we loved making our Chinese Dragons, exploring Chinese symbols and creating fortune cookies for our friends.

Yesterday we loved being able to spend time with some of our grown ups at our Family Challenge! We made the flags of Great Britain using tissue paper. Thank you to all who were able to come!

We would both like to thank you for your continued support at Shirehampton Primary School. Don't forget to check the school calendar & newsletters for other important dates for your diaries.
