Shirehampton Primary School

Weekly and termly home learning (homework)

At Shirehampton Primary School we recognise that pupils who have spent a busy structured day at school need time to relax and unwind at home and have an opportunity to play. We believe that home learning activities should be set but should not promote resentment, friction and conflict. Home learning should be meaningful used to effectively consolidate and/or extend what is learned in school.

We hope that children will feel a sense of personal satisfaction in a task completed well and that their efforts will be recognised and praised both at home and at school. We appreciate parental support with this.

This approach aims to support children’s growing perception about their ability to complete a task outside the school environment. It also fosters the skills of independent learning necessary for future life.

You can view our Home Learning policy here.

READING

As always, every child is expected to read at home 4 times a week and record this in reading records. These will be checked every Friday and noted by the class teacher. Please sign the record when they read or scores will not count! To support this, children will receive a reward for reading four times.

Children are given a school library book to read at home. Each child now also has access to an online library called 'MyOn'. Usernames and passwords are the same as TTRS. Reading on MyOn should still be recorded in reading records. This will be checked on the system by class teachers to ensure it is accurate.

SPELLING

Please find below the links for the spellings for the entire year broken down into terms and weeks. The children will know what group they are in. If they forget, please ask their class teacher.

We give out spellings every Friday and test the following Friday.

MATHS

Each week, we want children to be accessing TTRockstars to support their maths knowledge and improve their speed of times tables.

Each child in Year 4 has been given their username and password details. If you need to be given these again, please do not hesitate to ask.

In preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check in June, children are encouraged to access this website: https://www.timestables.co.uk/multiplication-tables-check/ to improve their fluency and speed of times tables. Further times tables resources and games can be found on this website also.
